Ray Gudrups

Meet Ray Gudrups—the nomad, explorer, and storyteller who carved the path for hiExplorer. For over twenty years, Ray has wandered the world with a backpack, a chef’s knife (his original passport to adventure), and an insatiable curiosity for the wild, the mystical, and the unknown.

Ray’s heart beats strongest in the jungle. Since 2007, he’s been drawn to the emerald depths of Mexico and Guatemala, captivated by the wisdom of Mayan culture and the untamed beauty of the rainforest. He’s spent years learning from indigenous communities, participating in sacred ceremonies, and seeking the kind of experiences that don’t fit neatly into guidebooks.

Nature, for Ray, is more than scenery—it’s a teacher, a healer, and a source of endless wonder. His journeys have led him into ancient rituals, powerful plant medicine ceremonies (with a special reverence for Ayahuasca), and countless moments of awe beneath the jungle canopy. These experiences have shaped his belief that true adventure is about connection: to the land, its people, and the spirit within.

hiExplorer was born from Ray’s passion for authentic, transformative travel. With every journey, he invites fellow explorers to dive beneath the surface—whether that’s sharing a meal in a hidden village, paddling through jungle rivers, or joining a Mayan Temazcal sweatbath and sacred honey ceremony at sunrise. Ray’s approach is personal, playful, and deeply respectful, always seeking to bridge cultures and inspire curiosity.

Alongside his co-founder Gundars, Ray personally guides every flagship trip—offering not just destinations, but stories, insights, and a genuine sense of camaraderie. He’s also a proud parent, podcast host, and creator of the “Adventure Heroes” book series for kids, believing that the spirit of exploration belongs to everyone, young and old.

With Ray, adventure isn’t just a journey—it’s a way of life. He invites you to trade the ordinary for the extraordinary, to reconnect with nature, and to discover the magic that comes from traveling with an open heart (and maybe a chef’s knife tucked in your bag).

Stay adventurous.
